Carolyn Porco

Carolyn Porco is an American planetary scientist most known for her work imaging work on the Voyager missions, the Cassini mission, and the New Horizons mission to Pluto. She is an expert on planetary rings and the Saturnian moon, Enceladus. Carolyn has co-authored over 100 scientific papers on a varity of subjects and hopes to publish her own book shortly. A frequently sought after public speaker, Carolyn has given lectures at TED as well as the opening speech for Pangea Day in May 2008.  Carolyn has also won a number of awards for her contributions to science and the public sphere. Carolyn earned her BS degree from the State University of New York, and her PhD from the the California Institute of Technology, and wrote her doctoral dissertation focused on Voyager discoveries in the rings of Saturn. As a young Voyager scientist, Carolyn was the first person to describe the behavior of the eccentric ringlets and the “spokes” discovered by Voyager within the rings of Saturn. She was a co-originator of the idea to take a ‘portrait of the planets’ with the Voyager spacecraft, and participated in the planning, design, and execution of those images in 1990, including the famous Pale Blue Dot image of Earth. Jill Tarter

Jill’s work has mostly contributed to work relating to the search for extraterrestrial life.  She has published many technical papers and lectures both on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and the need for proper science education. She is credited with coining the term “brown dwarf” for the classification of stars with insufficient mass to sustain hydrogen fusion.  In 2012 Jill announced her retirement from SETI to focus on fundraising to keep the Allen Telescope operational for SETI research.
